AFSCME Leads Court Battle In Prison Lay-Offs

JOHNSON COUNTY- A hearing will be held next week on a lawsuit trying to stop state layoffs. The AFSCME union filed the lawsuit last month in Johnson County home of the Vienna prison.

Fifty Vienna staffers are among 2,600 state workers set to be laid off due to budget cuts.

The union says the layoffs would create serious safety hazards for workers.

Quinn says the job cuts are necessary to balance the state budget.

But he says many could be avoided if the union agrees to take some unpaid days off," There may be some layoffs, but I think basically we can do a lot of good where we can just come up with a formula where everybody works together and there's shared sacrifice."

Quinn says he also wants to ask state workers to give up a pay raise.

The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, September 10th in Vienna.
