Giannoulias Kicks Off Senate Campaign In Marion

MARION -- His mentor holds the highest office in the land. But State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias wants President Obama's old Senate seat in hopes of enacting major reforms on health care and the economy.

"We are at a seminal moment in this nation's history, where the decisions that are made over the next few years will shape our nation for generations we must move forward," said Ginnaoulias, speaking at the Laborer's Local 773 in Marion.

But moving forward to Washington could be hard, long and expensive. State Representative Brandon Phelps admits this will be a tough campaign as the Republicans hope to take back the President's former seat.

"Folks I know somebody who can weather the storm better than any of us and he will take on anybody," said Phelps.

The controversy involving former Governor Rod Blagojevich and the appointment of Senator Roland Burris is sure to be a hot button issue, but Giannoulias says pay to play politics will not be a part of his campaign.

"I am the first candidate running for the U.S. Senate in the history of Illinois to refuse contributions from corporate PACs and federal lobbyists, that's not talk that's action," said Giannoulias.

But how will the Chicago Democrat fare in southern Illinois? In the presidential election, President Obama only won four of the southern 17 counties. But Giannoulias hopes his time in the State Treasurer's office will garner him support.

"One thing I can say about this guy, he lives up north but he will not forget about us," said Senator Gary Forby.

"We spent a lot of time in southern Illinois, we opened the first ever state treasurer's satellite office in Mt. Vernon and I love being here, so I think that's something that's gonna resonate with folks," said Giannoulias.

Fellow Democrat, Chris Kennedy, is considering a run for the seat too. And U.S. Representative Mark Kirk, a Republican from Chicago has already announced he's running for the Senate seat as well as retired Judge Don Lowery from Pope County.
