Motorcycle Rallies Prompt Road Blocks
GALLATIN COUNTY, Ill.-- Thousands of bikers are headed to the region this weekend for the Old Shawneetown and Little Sturgis motorcycle street rallies.
Along the way they'll come across Illinois State Police road blocks where officers will be checking for drivers that are operating unsafe motorcycles, drivers license violations, transporting open alcoholic beverages, or driving under the influence.
"We have a zero tolerance policy on alcohol violations and anyone that is stopped driving while impaired will be arrested," said Master Sgt. Nathan Douglas.
According to the Illinois State Police alcohol and drugs are a factor in 40 percent of motorcycle accidents in Illinois.
Officers expect to pull over every other biker that passes through the road blocks. They won't hesitate to pull over other drivers too.
"We will be stopping vehicles as well as motorcycles. We're not singling out any one over the other," Douglas said.
The road block was set up at the intersection of Routes 1 and 13 Thursday. Officers may change locations throughout the weekend. There will be an increased police presence county-wide.
