Vandals Cause Grave Damage

ELDORADO, Ill.-- Police are on the lookout for the vandals who knocked over more than a hundred tombstones at two Saline County cemeteries.

Workers at the usually-tidy Wolf Creek Cemetery arrived to find the mess Wednesday morning.

"It actually looked like [someone] had rolled a giant bowling ball through there and rolled over hundreds of stones," Eldorado Police Chief Shannon Deuel said as he looking over the cemetary Thursday.

Deuel says he's not sure if vandals used their hands or ATV's, but they did not discriminate. They knocked over more than 150 tombstones at Wolf Creek and St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery next door.

"I don't think they're taking into consideration the money that people pay to put these out here for family members who pass away," Deuel said.

Most tombstones were put back up with in hours by cemetery workers. Still Deuel says the crime is serious.

"Each tombstone is a different [felony] case, so you're talking several hundred cases of criminal damage to property," he said.

Deuel admits they're having a tough time identifying suspects because it's hard to lift finger prints from textured tombstones and tracks from ATV's have been disturbed.

Police are asking anyone with information about the vandalism to contact Eldorado Police or the Saline County Sheriff's Department.
