FEMA Meeting
HARRISBURG-Help will soon be on the way for the six local counties devastated by the May 8th storm. This week state and local officials learned how to apply for federal aid to cover clean up costs.
May's storms put a strain on people in our region, and their property. But it also took its toll on local governments.
"During that period we had a lot of hours of overtime we called out officers, we held over communications people to handle calls to track all the people who were impacted by this storm," said Saline County sheriff Keith Brown.
Brown learned how his department will be able to recuperate some of that expense at a state disaster briefing in Harrisburg.
"It's very important that we have this program so that we can help reimburse the communities so they can restock their funds for the next disaster."
The federal emergency management agency we cover 75% of what governments and private non-profit groups spent on the the clean up
"This ones coming in at $20 million so it's a good sized disaster had a lot of impact."
But first those organizations have to apply for federal aid. Curtis Caldwell with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency spent the day teaching those organizations how to get help.
"FEMA provides the funding to the state of Illinois and we sub-grant it to the local units of government for their extraordinary expenses," said Caldwell.
FEMA officials say it could be a couple months before money starts trickling in.
