County-Wide Recycling Program

MARION, Ill.--- They cut a green ribbon Friday to kick off a green project.

Organizers of the Williamson County Recycling Drop-off Program say there is a pile of reasons to participate.

"One hundred thousand pounds [of garbage] per person is what we will leave as a legacy to [our] children," said Tracey Glenn who coordinated the program with business owner Teresa Katubig.

Glenn and Katubig say the county--and the environment--desperately need the program.

Until now there has been no county-wide recycling effort. Katubig said she found that "really quite sad."

The Friends of Recycle Williamson County used nearly a $40,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to purchase four trailers for collecting cans, bottles, cardboard and papers.

Those trailers are located at Williamson County Regional Airport, the Johnson City Fire Department and Williamson County Fire Stations in Marion and Creal Springs.

There are a total of nine collection points across the county. A list can be found at the organization's website www.recyclewilliamsoncounty.org along with a list of recycling guidelines.

"You can take all your junk mail, all your magazines all your newspapers. If everyone just did that that would be a huge help," Katubig said.

All that paper will be taken from drop-off sites to larger recycling centers.

"In the next month or so we'll monitor what comes in and we're going to start making projections and we're actually going to set goals for what we want to collect next year," Glenn said.

The initial goal is 218 tons of material each year.
