Man Robs Du Bois Bank

Play Video
DU BOIS, Ill.-- The search is on for the suspect who robbed the Farmers and Merchants National Bank on Broadway Friday.

Washington County Sheriff Charles Parker says the robber walked into the bank around 9:20 a.m.

He left just a few moments later with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"He passed a note to the teller saying that he was armed. A weapon wasn't displayed," Parker said.

The suspect was caught on surveillance video which showed him wearing khaki shorts, a green-and-white Under Armour shirt, a baseball cap and white tennis shoes. He had a short sandy-blonde beard and wore eyeglasses.

Investigators estimate that he is approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs between 200 and 230 pounds.

According to Parker the robber left the bank and walked about a block and a half to where he had parked a tan older-model Buick Century with no license plates.

"He was followed by a fellow that worked for Frontier telephone company for a period," Parker said. The
worker eventually lost sight of the suspect.

James Kozuszek works at his mother's bar across the street from the bank. He says news of the robbery spread quickly in Du Bois.

"This is a peaceful town. There's usually no problems around here," Kozuszek said.

Police had not identified the man Friday evening. The investigation continues.

A photo of the suspect has been distributed to law enforcement agencies and news outlets across the region.

"[The teller] is a good friend... we did business with the bank everyday so I hope they catch him," Kozuszek said.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call the Washington County Sheriff's Department at 618-327-8274 or the Illinois State Police at 618-542-2171.
