200 Volunteers Help Search for Missing Man

Play Video
UNION COUNTY, Ill.-- About 200 volunteers responded to the call to search for Raymond Baggett.
The 92-year-old Union County man--who suffers from Alzheimers--went out for a walk Tuesday morning around 6 and hasn't been heard from since.

Some who showed up to search the area near Winghill Road knew the missing man.

"He used to got to church here years ago when I was real little. Just kind of makes you want to help that much more," said volunteer Bill Klutts.

Others know someone like him.

"[My] mother-in-law has end-stage Alzheimers, so it hits home," said Susan Hurn. She came from Jonesboro to help.

Most of the searchers are volunteer first responders.

"When it's something like this we're automatically right here," said C.W. Nimmo, a captain with the Dongola Volunteer Fire Department.

All hope to find the missing man before it's too late.

"The more people that are our here, the more eyes that are looking for the man and he won't last long in the heat, he'll be dehydrated and die," Hurn said.

As the search continues more people will be needed to canvas an even larger area. Those that helped on Tuesday are looking for more help and more equipment.

"People with four-wheelers, gators, any kind of off road vehicles we could use," Nimmo said.

Coordinators on the scene are working to keep volunteers fed and hydrated. Beverages have been donated by restaurants, sheriff's departments and volunteers. Local businesses are being asked to consider donating food and other items that may be needed.
