Children's Shelter Soon to Open

Play Video
FRANKLIN COUNTY-- A local safe haven for abused and neglected children will soon start offering its service.

The Night Shield in West Frankfort was a community effort, developed to provide emergency shelter for children removed from their homes.

The Night Shield puts a focus on keeping siblings together that are usually separated during a family crisis.

The children can live at the shelter for up to 30 days while DCFS finds them a foster home.

Founder Sara Bond says the project would not have been possible without the help of many.

"Southern Illinois people actually wrapping their heart around the idea that there is something we can do for these kids. This project started just as an idea over coffee but what I realized quickly was that this was not something that we could do on our own" says Bond.

Bond says the shelter is completely paid for.
The facility and almost everything inside it was donated.
