New Motorcross Park Means More Business?
FRANKLIN COUNTY-- Driving north along I-57 near West Frankfort you may have noticed mounds of dirt and large machinery. You're looking at the makings of the I-57 Motorcross Park located off 7th street near the I-57 overpass.
Owners, Kyle and Rocky Ridgeway, say they expect it to attract a lot of people, and local business owners say, they hope the Ridgeways are right.
They're currently putting the finishing touches on the more than 2-mile, twist and turn motorcross track. But co-owner, Kyle Ridgeway, has already taken a spin.
"Its a blast! It's the funnest track I've ever rode on- it really is."
Ridgeway says most tracks in the area only take about a minute to ride. He says this track takes closer to three minutes and is more like the tracks used for national competitions.
"These guys, when they go there, they don't have anywhere to train for that style. So hopefully, that's what we can do is put that type of training in here."
And, Ridgeway says, he thinks his track could attract hundreds if not thousands of enthusiasts, and help put the economy in West Frankfort into high gear.
"You know, they have to have a place to eat, they gotta have a place to sleep, so they're gonna come to all of our close restaurants, gas stations, hotels."
Local business owners hope he's right. Like managers at the Gray Plaza Motel...
"More people here, then more people come to stay here and the more business. Its good for our town and good for us too," explains Tanuja Batil.
Mike Glodich, sales manager at the local rec-sport dealer, Glodich Honda, agrees. He says, he believes, the new park will stimulate not only the senses but also the local economy.
"Oh, it will be good for the area. We need something positive like that. Anything to bring people in, those guys, the Ridgeways, will do a good job at it."
The park's grand opening is slated for Saturday, June 20th.
