Uncovering Illinois State Government
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -Taxpayers seeking information about their government would find easier sledding under a measure the Illinois House has approved.
Lawmakers voted 116-0 on Wednesday to overhaul the state's Freedom of Information Act.
The measure requires public bodies to respond to requests for information more quickly.
It creates a post in the attorney general's office which would have power to determine disputes over disclosure.
And it would impose civil penalties against governmental bodies which purposefully hide information.
The legislation is part of the General Assembly's attempts to
strengthen ethics laws in the aftermath of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. He faces a 19-count federal indictment for corruption.
The bill now goes to the Senate. The bill is SB189.
