Wildlife Affected by Storm
WILLIAMSON COUNTY-- Last week’s storm has not only affected people-- it's affected numerous animals as well.
Many have been injured or displaced from their habitats.
Raccoon row is just one of the places at Second Nature Wildlife in Thompsonville, where abandoned or injured animals can recover.
"We just have the philosophy that every little life deserves a chance" says Director Pam Sundeen.
She says the storm not only damaged their facilities, it also sent them an influx of animals whose homes were destroyed.
"The poor raccoons, squirrels and birds that all live in the trees, so many of their homes were up rooted."
Sundeen and her group of volunteers are working around the clock to care for all the raccoons that recently became orphans.
They nurse them back to health and then teach them to become sufficient in the wild.
The Free Again wildlife rehabilitation center in Carterville has also suffered because of the storm.
Numerous cages were damaged and some animals even died.
They're now trying to take care of numerous birds that were displaced from the storm.
Sundeen says all things considered, it's a difficult time to provide care for needy animals.
"We don't have a lot of funding we are 100% donation funded and of course, with the economy and the storm, donations have not been pouring into the mail box" says Sundeen.
She's now asking the public to help any way they can.
"We don't want to have to turn anything away but soon they'll have to find another place to take them."
She suggests that when cleaning up downed trees in the yard-- think about those who used to live there.
