Police Chase Ends in Driveway
FRANKLIN COUNTY-- Police say a hit and run lead to a chase thru two Southern Illinois counties Sunday night. A Tamaroa couple reported they'd been hit by another car along route 154 near Pinckneyville. So, Sesser police waited at the intersection of 154 and 148 to intercept the suspects.
But they didn't stop for police. The driver, along with three passengers, went through the intersection- off the main highway and down Coal Road. As locals will tell you, Coal Road tees with Sesser Lake only a few miles down. If you continue through the tee, you run into Rob Schuchmann's driveway, which is exactly what suspects did...
"They came straight across thinking, I guess, they could go straight through," said a startled Schuchmann. "I head sirens and I looked out the door, my wife's out there, and seen a black car come down my road."
Robert's wife, Rhonda, captured the scene with the family's video camera. Robert says, a Franklin County deputy filled him in on the action in his back yard.
"They was running from the cops and they thought they could go straight through here. And uh, found our they couldn't and pulled in beside my truck and was trying to hide from police."
Sesser police say the driver, 23-year-old Ramon Cruz, and three passengers were speeding away from a hit and run in Perry County earlier in the evening.
"Chased them clear over here," Schuchmann said as he pointed to his driveway.
All four men were taken into custody. Cruz is charged with DUI and driving without a valid drivers licence. Police say his blood alcohol content was double the legal limit. One passenger was charged with resisting arrest. The two others were later released. Officers say none of the men were able to produce American Identification. Police say the incident is still under investigation.
As for Schuchmann...
"Little more excitement around here then we care to have," he said with a smile.
Sesser police say, in broken english, the driver claimed to be from Cape Girardeau. Police Chief, Rob Barrett, says they were able to track the arrested passenger's last residence to Mexico. As for the victims of the hit and run, they sustained minor bumps and bruises.
