Class Act: Learning a Valuable Lesson
WSIL-TV- The 1968 classical children's book, "Corduroy", written by Don Freeman, tells the story of a teddy bear named Corduroy, who is bought in a toyshop by a girl named Lisa.
This past October second, students, their parents, and teachers all over the country read the story in unison taking part in Jumpstart's Read for the Record day.
Allison fronm The High School Beta Club says, "So many of the high school kids that volunteered from Beta said, "Oh, I read that book as a kid. I want to be in it. I want to read it to the little kids!"
At the Goreville school, students in Pre-K through 3rd grade got a little more illustration during their story time. It started out as a small endeavor but with help from the PTA and the high
school Beta Club It just kept growing and growing and growing .
Besides creating excitement for reading, this was a fund raising day.
Jumpstart has donated thousands of books to low-income communities for children. This year's reading campaign shattered last year's record with over 425,000 participants.
Formed at Yale University in 1993, Jumpstart now provides a curriculum to nearly 15,000 kids in the U.S.
In the story, Corduroy has to find his lost button. A little button on a card was handed out to each student.
It reads...Good things do not always have to be new, shiny, or perfect...Sometimes the best things are older, comfortable, or need a friend's fixing...Seems there are plenty of good friends for the students atGoreville.
