Cheap Gas in Southern Illinois

Play Video
DE SOTO - During this time of economic strain it's nice to see that at least pain at the pump is easing, especially for folks filling up in De Soto were gas is less than $3.20 a gallon.

"It's great, someone at work told me about it" says customer Robert Mezo.

The price is $3.19 at the Four Way Quik Stop and $3.18 at the Handee Mart and people are taking advantage

"At this price you're silly not to, you know what I mean?" says Customer Ed Cash.

Raj Batish runs the Handee Mart. He says he's still making a profit and can hardly believe people's reaction.

"A lot of appreciation, they said because of me the prices are coming down in this area so I'm happy. I'm helping the people in this money crisis" says Batish.

Tim Parsons owns the four way down the block and says he's been busy too.

"Everybody from Murphysboro to Marion from everywhere came out. We had 6 to 8 cars deep" says Parsons.

Tim says he's shocked that De Soto's fuel is so much cheaper than the rest.

"I honestly thought other gas stations would be following suit shortly because the gas prices are going down. I don't know why their prices are where they're at today, it doesn't make any sense to keep them that high because that would be kind of gouging the market."

The two station owners admit they're in competition, but say they're not in a price war. Whatever they call it, many customers call it a blessing.

"I thank the lord we're here" says Customer Victor Fann.

Station owners say the overwhelming response they've received from the public shows them just how tight things are in Southern Illinois and say they plan to keep prices as low as they can for as long a they can.
