Did you know that only 111 million people are eligible to donate blood? That's just over 37% of the U.S. population. Of those, only about 3% actually donate blood. Locally, you'll be able to give blood on the following dates: Wednesday, November 18th from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Dongola Unit School District #66 located at 1000 High Street in Dongola. Friday, November 29th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cobden High School located at 413 Appleknocker Drive in Cobden.

Held in historic Golconda, Nov. 18-21, the county fair-like celebration is well known for its barbecue, which is prepared by the Crim brothers. Hungry guests can start filling up at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19. Great food from a variety of vendors, handmade arts and crafts, wildlife displays and a flea market atmosphere are just some of the unique offerings that have made the Deer Festival such a popular yearly event.

John A. Logan College will present "Almost, Maine" this Thursday through Saturday in O'Neil Audiorium. "Almost, Maine" is a play written by John Cariani about how the mysteries of love touch the residents of a small town in northern Maine. The performances are set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in O'Neil Auditorium. Two matinees, also in O'Neil Auditorium, will be held on Thursday and Friday and will begin at 10 a.m. Tickets for the evening shows are $8 for general admission and $5 for students. Tickets for the matinees are $1 for the general public and free to Logan students and staff. The Madrigal Dinner Theater is putting on the show. The show will be RLC’s fourth annual installment under the direction of Sara Alstat. Audience members will enjoy a three-course meal inside a castle on stage with a working drawbridge. Tickets are only $25 each, which includes dinner and the show. They can be purchased by calling the RLC Box Office at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1467. Show times are 7 p.m. Nov. 19-21 and 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22. This year, Alstat went with a parody of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
