The nonprofit Little Egypt Arts Centre is in need of repairs. 50 artist members of the Little Egypt Arts Association will paint portraits on August 28 for the 100 Faces Project. The cost is $100 for an 8X10 canvas board portrait of a favorite human or pet face. There will be a reception on September 10 from 5-7pm, & purchasers can take their portraits home at that time. FTFM also provides nutritional drinks for the ill, baby formula, & sponsors the Annual Holiday Dinner with the help of area churches, among other things. Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Health, an exhibit from the National Library of Medicine, will be on display. It promotes quality of life elements, including nutritious food & clean water, a safe place to live, & affordable health care. At 10am on Wed., Sept. 21st, a special event will celebrate the exhibit with Patti Simon, the wife of the late U.S. senator, speaking at 10:30am. A reception with refreshments follows. This exhibition raises awareness of the sources & effects of health inequalities & invites each of us to join the global campaign for health & human rights. An Alzheimer’s Association Support Group is a FREE, confidential gathering led by a trained professional or volunteer. People who attend are family, friends & other caregivers who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, a related dementia, or memory problems. The 1st group meets on the last Wed. of every month at 6 pm at Green Tree Assisted Living, in Mt. Vernon. Classes for ages 2 & 3 & their caregivers meet from 9-10am, & ages 4-6 from 10-11am. The cost is $35. An acrylic painting class for the adult who has limited time, but wants to learn to create paintings can drop in anytime between 11am & 1pm. Cost is $50 for LEAA members & $65 for nonmembers. All supplies will be furnished. This class is designed for beginners to intermediate. Homeschoolers’ semi-private art lessons will be offered from 1-4pm. One hour long classes are limited to 4 homeschooled children of similar ages or sibling groups. The cost is $40 per 6 week session. There are 3 sessions of after school classes for children ages 7-14, & will be held from 4-5pm. Session 1 is for children age 7-9. All classes listed above run from Aug. 26 to Sept. 30. Session 2 is for students age 10-14 & runs from Nov. 4-Dec. 16. The cost for these classes is $35. Their children include Silas Stearns, James Monroe Stearns, Mary Ellen (Stearns) Hunsaker, Adams Stearns Sr., John (Dump) Stearns, David (Stearnes) Stearns, & Harriett (Stearns) Mighell. John's second wife was Easter Lindsey Tope Coleman, & together they had William Lafayette Stearns. All of these children had a combined total of 66 children, who started getting together in 1947 - and the reunion has been held every year!

The 2010-2011 Tele-Institute Series of Local Government Education Programs schedule is: September 30, 2010 – Legislative Update 2010; October 21, 2010 – Regionalism: An Approach to Economic Development; December 2, 2010 – Orientation for Newly Elected Officials – Part 1; December 16, 2010 – Orientation for Newly Elected Officials – Part 2; January 20, 2011 – Census Data; February 17, 2011 – Numbers: Do Your Youth Count?; March 17, 2011 – The CountDown on Families Begins; April 21, 2011 – Count on Your Elder Community. The programs will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. Tele-Institute programs provide local officials with an excellent opportunity to connect with representatives of state and national agencies, university faculty, Extension staff, and community leaders who are knowledgeable about current issues without leaving their county.
