The Science Center’s newest special exhibit will feature the WSIL Channel 3 News Desk where kids can anchor "The Science Center News", and production cameras and machines from days gone by. The exhibit is free with regular museum admission. School and other organized groups can call now to reserve a time to visit the museum. WSIL TV 3's "The Vision of Television: a History of Television, Past, Present and Future" will be on display at The Science Center through May 31, 2008. The Beautiful Southern Ride is a fund-raising event to benefit the Carbondale Boys and Girls Club. The ride is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carbondale-Breakfast and the Carbondale Bicycle Club. Participants can choose from a 15-mile family ride, a mid-length 30-mile ride, or a metric century (62 miles). Routes include some challenging hills as they travel through southern Illinois, south of Carbondale, passing lakes, wineries, and orchards and through the Shawnee National Forest and SIUC campus. Otherwise, the terrain is flat to rolling. Entry fee: $15 per person or $40 for 3 or more riders from the same household. All rides start and end at the Carbondale Middle School. Restrooms and showers are available at the school. Registration is from 7-9 a.m. Sags end at 4 p.m. Plan to start in time to finish by 4 p.m. The routes are marked and cue sheets will be provided. The 30 mile and metric century (62 miles) will have rest stops with snacks, water, and Gatorade. All routes will be sagged. Helmets are required to be worn by all riders. The Alto Pass Volunteer Fire Department will be having a fundraiser Saturday May 17th at the Alto Vineyard. Gates open at 12pm with the band "The Limit" taking the stage at 1pm. Admission is $7.00. Location: Granada Theater in downtown Mt. Vernon
Registration for the event begins at 8:00 AM and the competition will begin at 10:00 AM. Registrants can enter in the category appropriate to their talent level with a maximum of 64 entrants per category. The categories and the fees are Easy for $5.00, Medium for $7.50, Hard for $10.00 and Expert for $12.50. Admission to the event will cost $2.00 and benefits the Granada Center for the Performing Arts. Prizes will vary according to difficulty and depend upon participation. Guitarists will perform one song each in head to head competition and be judged by a team of three judges. Refreshments will be served during the competition. "Anyone can participate," said Chris Murphy, event chairman. "There are so many talented guitarists and scoring these winners is going to be a challenge. Luckily, the game will take care of that aspect for our judges"
