Upcoming Holiday Season Brings Additional Jobs
MARION -- Retail stores are just starting to head into their holiday shopping season, but time is running out if you're hoping to find a temporary job.
Many stores have already begun hiring additional employees and most will have their entire staff of seasonal workers in place before the end of the month.
"Sometimes we will hire anywhere from 10 to 20 people," says Marion Rural King Assistant Manager Donna Scheffer. "The more the customer shops, of course, the greater the need to take care of the customer."
She says the store will be adding new workers to many different positions in the coming weeks.
"We actually look for quite a few cashiers because at this time of the year, our front end is what we need to have filled," explains Scheffer.
The upcoming months mark the busiest time of the year for Rural King and for many other stores.
"Business had been ramping up," says Jim Hawkinson with Spirit Halloween in Carbondale. "Every day has gotten a little bit busier. And of course the weekends, we have just been packed all weekend long."
Hawkinson's store began hiring additional employees more than a month ago.
"We will probably hired another ten," he explains. "We are now up to 22 temporary employees. We have actually had a lot of people apply. We have had them go online and we are probably getting about 5 to 10 of those a day."
Many seasonal jobs will only last a few months, but Scheffer says sometimes businesses will rehire seasonal employees when a full-time position becomes available.
"They will stay with the store for three months and sometimes a little bit longer if need be," Scheffer says.
