Special Olympics Athlete Receives 100th Medal
HERRIN -- One person that is competing in the Special Olympics has another reason to celebrate. Eric Baumann received his 100th medal on Friday from competing in Special Olympic events. Baumann has been competing in the Special Olympics for nearly 20 years. He started when he was eight years old.
Baumann was also part of the Illinois delegation that traveled to the 2003 World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland.
"It makes me feel like I am worth it, and it makes me feel that I have stuck with it long enough and the benefits are starting to pay off," Baumann explains.
He participates in the Special Olympics with three different agencies: Start, Family Counseling and Choate. Baumann also serves as one of Area 15's key volunteers and is a global messenger with Special Olympics Illinois.
