Miners' Fields Signs With Kansas City Royals

MARION -- The Southern Illinois Miners are losing one of their best players.

Miners first baseman Matt Fields' contract was purchased by the Kansas City Royals Thursday afternoon. Fields will join the Royals high-A affiliate in Wilmington, Delaware.

Before yesterday's game, Miners manager Mike Pinto honored Fields, who has spent the last two years with the team. Fields currently leads the Frontier League with nine home runs.

Matt was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2004 and played six seasons with the club, spending two years in Double-A.
