Waltonville's Miller Wins State Title, Carbondale Runner-up

CHARLESTON -- Seventeen girls from Southern Illinois won two state titles, four runner-up medals, two third place medals and had six others finish in the top five at the IHSA girls state track and field meet Saturday afternoon on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Waltonville native Chelsea Miller won the Class 1A state title in the 200-meter dash, running for Sesser-Valier-Waltonville. It marks the first state title in school history for the Spartans. She also took second in the 100-meter dash and seventh in the long jump.

Carbondale finished runner-up in the Class 2A team standings. The Terriers tied with Walther Lutheran for second with 39 points.

Also in 2A, Massac County's Leilani Hill had the third best time in the 800-meter run at 2:14.10. Shaneice Bufford from Carbondale also finished third in the 100-meter high hurdles.

In 1A, Chester junior Sarah Bindel took second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 44.88 seconds, breaking the Yellow Jackets' school record she set in the prelims on Thursday.
