CARTERVILLE -- A week ago, Carterville junior Dalton Hoch knocked away the potential game winning two point conversion to preserve the Lions' 35-34 overtime win at Vandalia in the opening round of the playoffs.

Saturday, Hoch upped the ante--picking off Benton quarterback Mat Buntin four times to help the Lions to a dominating 30-14 win over the Rangers in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Carterville forced five turnovers and recorded a safety to earn a trip to the quarterfinals.

Fellow juniors Michael Aschemann and Phillip Frangello took care of the load offensively for Carterville. Aschemann threw a touchdown and ran in another to go with Frangello's two rushing scores.

Dylan Sheeks scored both of Benton's touchdowns, as the Rangers finished the season 9-2.

Carterville (8-3) will host Greenville next week.
