Vienna-Goreville Overcomes Heat, Johnston City
VIENNA -- The IHSA made heat acclimation a major point of emphasis this offseason, to the point of restructuring the way teams could practice to start the season.
When practice started though, temperatures were in the 70s. Saturday afternoon, Johnston City and Vienna-Goreville kicked off their season in the sweltering heat with a heat index approaching 105 degrees.
Both teams had the water and cold towel brigades working overtime on the sidelines.
Johnston City scored late in the first half to take an 8-7 lead into the break. As the teams left for halftime, Eagles' coach Mike Rude was overcome by heat and had to sit down. Eventually he had to be helped from the field and was taken to a local hospital.
Two game officials and a V-G player also left the game to be treated for the heat-related illnesses.
The game continued.
In the third, Connor Seavers scored from three yards out, and that turned out to be the game winner, as Vienna-Goreville held on for a 14-8 win.
