Unsung Hero: Lisa Thompson
COBDEN -- With the click of a button and the snap of a lens, Lisa Thompson is helping shelter animals find a home.
"I've always had a love for animals," said Lisa Thompson.
Lisa was helping a rescue group in Alabama when she met another woman from northern Illinois. They had the idea to help the animals in southern Illinois find homes through social media.
"They [shelter empolyees] said there was more animals in than there was people passing by and they could really use some help so we put the page together," said Lisa.
Lisa posts pictures of the pets at Union County Animal Control on the facebook page "***Rescue Me*** Dogs and Cats of Union County Il." She says that way more people can see the pets without coming to the shelter.
"It's out of site out of mind," said Lisa, "so without networking animals would have no hope other than the one or two seen by passer-bys."
The page was created over a year ago and shelter workers say there's no doubt Lisa has helped save many animals' lives.
"Without her I don't know how we would get these animals some place safe where we could save their lives," said Union County Animal Control Officer Brandi Wheeler.
Lisa and the other volunteers will often times drive hundreds of miles to transport a pet to a rescue group.
"When they pulled up and there was 40 people standing there waiting to see their dogs and their cats and the tears flowing and the dogs and cats purring and tales wagging for those reunions, that safety, there's nothing that will replace feelings like that," said Lisa.
"It means a lot to me," said Brandi, "everybody and everything deserves a second chance. Lisa has worked very hard to find forever homes for these animals and that means the world to me and Dirk."
Despite all of the hard work Lisa has already done, soon the shelter will again be busting at the seams with homeless animals. And Lisa will be ready to take pictures and share their cuteness with others.
The shelter is always in need of donations and volunteers. To find out how you can help, head to the facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Rescue-Me-Dogs-and-Cats-of-Union-County-Il-Animal-Control/129477153824913?fref=ts
