Cobden Celebrates 'Amazing Appleknockers'
COBDEN-- Back before there were multiple classes in the IHSA, Cobden High's 1964 basketball team put together a magical season. The 'Amazing Appleknockers,' as they were called, went 32-3 and were one of eight teams to qualify for the state tournament, finishing runner-up. The tall and talented club routinely played schools bigger than their entire town and were known throughout the Midwest for their underdog squad who overachieved.
Cobden High celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 'Amazing Appleknockers' before their game with Vienna, in a special ceremony. Eight of the original players and Coach Ruggles were in attendance.
After, Cobden led Vienna at the half by three but fell to the Eagles 70-56 in their home opener.
