Verhines (Plural) Headed to SIU
WSIL -- Several area athletes made their college decisions official Wednesday, including two more headed to SIU.
After helping lead Rend Lake to the Juco Division II National Championship, the Verhines brothers from Woodlawn will continue their family reunion in Carbondale next year.
6-7 forward Bronson Verhines signed the scholarship papers with SIU Wednesday. Bronson earned National Tourney MVP honors, averaging 15 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 64 percent from the field to go with 12 blocks and nine assists in four games. For the season, Bronson averaged 9.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. He will have one year of eligibility left.
Dawson Verhines is a 6-3 guard. He will walk on at Southern after being a major contributor in Rend Lake's back to back trips to the national tournament. Dawson averaged 7.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game last season. He shot 44.7% from three point range.
Meanwhile, Marion and John A. Logan standout Aaron Adeoye has signed with Western Kentucky. Adeoye averaged 14 points and eight rebounds a year for the Vols this past season. He picked the Hilltoppers over Murray State and Indiana State.
Adeoye's teammate, Connor Wheeler from Du Quoin, signed with Central Missouri.
Murphysboro's Jerrod Gaston will be headed to Pittsburg State after playing two years at Vincennes.
Cam Keener, also from Murphysboro, will be playing baseball next year at the University of New Orleans. Keener played at Olney Central the past two years.
A pair of Herrin Tiger football players signed Wednesday as well.
Fullback/linebacker Nathan Vaughn will play college ball for MacMurray, while teammate Austin Butler is headed for Millikin.
