Sidewalk Makeover for Du Quoin
DU QUOIN -- The city's downtown will soon be getting a make-over. A $700,000 sidewalk project is scheduled to start on Monday. It's one of four improvement projects the city has in the works. The sidewalks on main street will be replaced and new trees brought in. The town received a grant to cover 80% of the cost.
City Administrator Brad Myers has been working with downtown businesses that may be impacted and believes in the end, the project will be worth it.
"It looks nice now, but it's an old town. You know 1847 is when we were incorporated. Our infrastructure is getting old and we've already tried to improve that, and the sidewalks uptown need to be re-done."
The work will stretch from Hickory Street to Washington and is expected to last until March. Construction will take a short break during the holiday shopping season.
