Restaurant Report Card: September 16, 2013
WSIL -- A 75 lands New Day Café in Woodlawn the bottom spot on the Restaurant Report Card.
The critical issues included two packages of spoiled hot dogs in the kitchen, along with rotten cucumbers and tomatoes. Two pies and some whipped cream also had to be thrown out, because the refrigerator they were in wasn't cold enough. There was no sanitizer at all in the buckets used to soak the cleaning cloths, and New Day Café needed a manager certified in food handling safety.
Most of the critical violations were corrected right away, but there were also more minor deductions for unlabeled food in the cooler, a cook that didn't have their hair covered properly, plastic bags being reused to store other foods, and parts of the walls and floor that were dirty.
Management says the inspector caught them in a bad moment, and the marks were a huge departure from their normally high scores.
The health department gave Maid Rite in Christopher an 86 on its most recent check. There was only one critical problem. Personal items like a hairbrush and fly swatter left above or on a food contact surface. The violation was fixed on the spot.
Maid Rite also lost points because only two of the six lights in the kitchen were working, the dumpster lid was open, and the walk-in cooler and a window air conditioning unit were both leaking. The kitchen ceiling also needed to be cleaned.
The Du Quoin Pizza Hut earned an 87. An issue with employee hand washing was the only critical violation.
The nozzles on the soda machine, some door handles and areas of the walls and floors were dirty. Additionally, the inspector recommended water be poured in all floor drains weekly to help avoid the smell of sewer gas.
Tres Hombres in Carbondale is next on our list with a 90, an 18-point improvement from the last time it was featured.
Some beans, rice, and chicken had to be thrown away because they weren't cold enough, and a pan of shrimp in the cooler needed to be covered to prevent contamination. The problems were corrected immediately.
And finally, Global Gourmet in Carbondale takes top honors this week with a perfect 100. The inspector praised the restaurant for good cleaning.
