Fixing Up Downtown Du Quoin

By Rachel Duensing

DU QUOIN  -- The city of Du Quoin is encouraging owners of historic buildings downtown to maintain the properties.

Some of the buildings are nearly 120 years old and run down. They're in need of fix-ups, from tuck-pointing to roof and window replacement. So the city has called in structural engineers to help assess the conditions of the structures.

Du Quoin Mayor Rex Duncan says preservation of the historic downtown is important to the entire community. "We love the look of our downtown, and a lot of folks appreciate the look of our downtown and we want to do everything we can to preserve that look." Duncan said.

Tax increment finance funds may be distributed to assist with preservation costs but most will be covered by the building owners.
