Du Quoin State Fair Boosts Regional Economy

By WSIL Reporter

DU QUOIN  --  This state fair is the biggest event to hit Du Quoin every year. Thousands of people, both local and tourists, come through the main gate. But their money doesn't just stay at the fairgrounds.

Fairgrounds Inn Manager Chasity McRoberts says the fair draws a big crowd, not only to her facility, but to hotels as far away as Marion and Mt. Vernon.
"Yes very big very very big. we're a 59 room hotel and we've been booked solid for the last nine months," McRoberts says.
They even offer $5 parking for people headed to the fair.
Restaurants are also doing good business.
Judy Black from Larry's Pit BBQ says they've been swamped with people looking for a break from the heat.
"We've done a lot of business (Thrusday) night and (Friday) morning we were kinda swamped," she says.
Many fairgoers say they've come to town prepared to spend extra money.
