DU QUOIN -- Carnival workers spent the day putting the final touches on the rides and preparing the games.

Friday, the Du Quoin State Fair kicks off for the 92nd year.  Thousands of people are expected to attend this year's events enjoying rides, music and all that fair food.

One by one, Lynn Thomas and her crew spent the day blowing up balloons and setting out stuffed animals. A task she said takes only takes a couple of hours but can be tedious.

"You just start building things up from the ground up and then you pretty much put in the guts, which is all the stock and everything," explained Thomas.

Ride workers were also making sure everything is up to par. Miller Spectacular Shows is offering carnival lovers 44 rides with three new ones this year.

Owner Freddy Miller has his lead staff going over everything with a fine tooth comb.

"Do we have park benches spread out close enough for the parents, for the children? Ticket box locations, ride signage and things like that," he explained.

Miller said all the rides have been inspected by the Department of Labor to help ensure safety. Rides are also inspected daily.

"It's always nice to have a fresh set of eyes. So we encourage anytime we can get an additional inspection."

The group arrived in Du Quoin a week ago. Miller likes to take advantage of the extra days by washing and waxing the rides. He said his carnivals are geared towards family and looks forward to everybody having a safe fun time.

"Du Quoin is a fantastic event for the family," he said. "There's something here for all ages."

Millers Carnival opens up at 3 p.m., followed by the parade at 6 p.m.
