DU QUOIN -- A Perry County boy is recovering after being hit by a train on his bicycle. It happened at 4:38 p.m. Thursday at the Main Street railroad crossing.

Du Quoin Police Chief Jamie Ellermeyer tells News 3 that Austin Booker, 12, of Du Quoin, was waiting on a southbound Canadian National train to clear the tracks. When it did, Booker crossed on his bicycle, not noticing an approaching northbound Amtrak train. He was struck by the front of the train on the upper leg area on the side and rear.

Ellermeyer says Booker was conscious and speaking clearly immediately following the accident. He was taken to Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin, before being transferred to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. Ellermeyer says his injuries were serious, but not life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation by the Du Quoin Police Department.
