Thousands Flock to Fort Massac Encampment
METROPOLIS -- Thousands of folks were able to take a step back in time Saturday for the 40th annual Fort Massac Encampment.
Military re-enactors of the French, British, and American armies are gathering in Metropolis this weekend. There are also many craftspeople who are bringing history to life at the annual event. Many of them even camp overnight at the park, sleeping in period tents, and cooking over a fire. The participants say they try to be as authentic as possible and that is what keeps folks coming back for more.
"This represents the people before us who actively went through living on the frontier during very unsettled times," says re-enactor Seth Graves.
Organizers set off fireworks at dusk in honor of the 40th anniversary. The event will continue Sunday until 5 p.m.
