MARION -- The Mt. Vernon Rams did everything but come away with a win Friday night at Marion. The Rams (0-5, 0-2) spent most of the night deep in Wildcats' territory, but Marion (4-1, 1-1) made enough defensive stops to escape with a 29-28 win.

The Wildcats scored on their second offensive play, a 46 yard TD run from Henry Jones for a quick 7-0 lead.

The Rams proceeded to dominate the next quarter and a half, driving inside Marion's 15 three different times. The Wildcats defense forced a Mt. Vernon turnover and stopped the Rams on downs before Clayton Reeves finally found the endzone with 19 seconds left in the first half. Marion blocked the extra point to lead 7-6 at halftime.

The Wildcats came out and scored twice in the third to build a 22-6 lead, but once again the Rams rallied to tie the game at 22 with nine minutes to go in the game.

After Marion grabbed a 29-22 lead, Mt. Vernon scored again to cut it to 29-28, but the Wildcats stuffed the Rams' two point conversion attempt to keep the lead.

Mt. Vernon got the ball back one more time, and once again marched into Marion territory only to be turned away on downs with a little more than a minute to play, securing the Wildcats' victory.

The Wildcats sported special navy and pink jerseys with fans sponsoring the jersey in memory of a cancer victim or survivor. The school also sold more than a thousand pink t-shirts. Funds raised from the pink out game will go to Marion teachers Fran Wachter and Marlyn Eiceman who are currently going through cancer treatment.

Marion will travel to Althoff next week. Mt. Vernon also will hit the road to take on Carbondale.
