History Making Weekend for Trico, Webber Township
PEORIA -- What a difference 24 hours can make--from the excitement of semifinal wins on Friday to the disappointment of coming up short in the state championship games. We say disappointment only because Trico and Webber Twp each had designs of taking home state titles. Instead, they will settle for second place--the best finishes in team history for both schools.
"Life changing. You look at this as a coach," said Webber Township head coach Sam Root, "these players never even thought this was a possibility. A lot of people...parents...didn't think this was possible, even though we had a lot of success. Our goal was to win a regional. It was an amazing two weeks. Two weeks ago, we were down to our finial strike at Woodlawn against Steeleville to be here today. It seems like a month and a half, to tell the truth. I couldn't be prouder to coach these 11 kids."
"You know, it's hard to put into words," said Trico head coach Drew Franklin. "I'm just so proud of those girls. What a great season--what a great ride we've had this year. Any time you win 26 games in a row, I think every coach in America would take that. I'll take that every year if someone wants to give it to me, and we'll take our chances in the title game next year."
The Lady Pioneers finish 33-4, while the he Trojans wrap up 23-11, but these teams will have stories to tell for years to come, and perhaps, laid the ground work for teams to come.
