Shockers Escape SIU's Late Run

By WSIL Sports

WICHITA, KS. -- SIU gave No. 23 Wichita State all it could handle and then some Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough, as the Shockers slipped by the Salukis 82-76 at a sold-out Koch Arena.

The Salukis (7-8, 0-4) entered the game double-digit underdogs but they only trailed by two with less than a minute to play after freshman Anthony Beane Jr. made two free throws to make it 78-76. The Shockers sealed the game in the final 30 seconds, making all four of their free throw attempts.

Wichita State (15-1, 4-0) came out firing, scoring the games first seven points in the opening 90 seconds. But SIU battled back late in the first half, using an 11-0 run to take a 41-30 lead with 4:18 to play.

The Shockers set the tone for the rest of the game in the opening five minutes of the second half. WSU opened the half on 10-0 run, forcing SIU to call two quick timeouts. The Shockers regained the lead for the good on an Ehimen Orukpe dunk with 15:30 remaining.

The loss drops SIU to 0-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The last time the Salukis started Valley play losing four straight games was 1987.
