Salukis Upset Shockers
CARBONDALE -- The SIU men's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak upsetting No. 22 Wichita State 64-62 Tuesday night at SIU Arena.
SIU (9-14, 2-10) trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half but used a 24-7 run and was only down one at the break. Senior guard T.J. Lindsay scored all 14 of his points in the first half, including four 3-pointers. The Shockers (19-5, 8-4) went more than 11 minutes without a field goal.
The Salukis took their first lead in the opening minute of the second half and built a nine-point advantage, 57-48, with 5:45 remaining. Wichita State went on run of its own, 12-1, to take a 60-58 lead with two minutes to play.
That's when freshman Jalen Pendleton took over.
The guard made two free throws and a driving layup into the lane to tie the game at 62. After a 35-second violation by the Shockers, Pendleton went hard to the rack and launched a floater at the rim with 2.0 seconds remaining. The shot was swatted away Ehimen Orukpe and goaltending was called. The ensuing half court shot by Wichita went wide right to preserve the win for Southern.
SIU scored three players in double-figures, led by Lindsay's 14 points. Desmar Jackson and Jeff Early added 11 points a piece.
