Salukis Cruise in Opener
CARBONDALE -- With 18 returning starters and a new look coaching staff, the Football Salukis have their sites set on ending a four year playoff drought.
The Dawgs crushed Taylor University 45-0 Thursday night in the season opener at Saluki Stadium. Taylor is an NAIA school, located northeast of Indianapolis.
Malcolm Agnew set the tone early. Agnew took SIU's first offensive play of the season 65 yards for a touchdown run. Agnew added a 45 yard scoring jaunt later in the first to put the Salukis up 14-0, and when Mika'il McCall scored from seven yards out, SIU led 21-0 after one.
In the second, quarterback Mark Iannotti threw his first touchdown pass as a Saluki--finding MyCole Pruitt for a ten yard score to make it 28-0.
Later in the second, Agnew appeared to make it 34-0, but the officials ruled he fumbled before crossing the goal line, and the Trojans recovered.
On SIU's next possession though, Iannotti hit Agnew on a nifty dump pass, and Agnew did the rest making quick work of 62 yards for a 35-0 Saluki lead.
Agnew rang up 207 total yards and three touchdowns in just a half of play.
The Salukis cruised through the second half to win 45-0.
SIU will hit the road next Saturday to pay a visit to Eastern Illinois.
