SIU Starts Spring Practice in Snow
CARBONDALE -- Spring practice started Monday morning for the football Salukis but mother nature must have missed the memo.
It looked and felt more like the middle of January than the end of March when workouts kicked off bright and early at 6:30 a.m. Monday. Temperatures hovered around the freezing mark as the team practiced outside for about an hour.
Head coach Dale Lennon said practicing in poor weather conditions is important. He was more worried about mental toughness than anything else, especially coming off a season where the team felt like largely under achieved.
The Salukis will practice 15 times this spring, a majority of those workouts will take place in the early morning hours. Lennon said he likes to start the day with a practice, that way they can have the rest of the day to watch film and lift weights.
SIU will scrimmage multiple times before its annual spring game on Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m.
SIU announced Monday the addition of a 12th game to the 2013 football schedule. The Salukis will host the University of Charleston on Saturday, September 14th.
The Golden Eagles are a private Division II school out of West Virginia. The University of Charleston finished last season with a record of 9-2.
