SIU, SEMO Formally Announce Busch Stadium Game
ST. LOUIS -- SIU and Southeast Missouri State will be a part of history when the teams meet in September. The Salukis and Redhawks will play in the first football game of any level at new Busch Stadium.
The game will be at 1:00 p.m. on September 21. Tickets will go on sale June 3. Student tickets will be $5, and tickets for adults will start at $10.
Representatives from both schools, as well as St. Louis Cardinals' President Bill DeWitt III, all spoke at a press conference Monday morning in St. Louis.
The Cardinals are looking to diversify the use of the stadium--adding football to professional soccer and concerts.
For SIU and Southeast, the St. Louis area is important for a number of reasons--including a strong alumni presence and recruiting base.
Some of the logistics of hosting a football game at Busch still have to be worked out. We do know the field will be set up with one endzone toward the first base dugout, with the field running toward the left field corner. In an effort to stay off the dirt infield as much as possible and to prevent any issues with the pitching mound, both teams will be on the same sideline.
Both teams have numerous players from the St. Louis area. Despite an unfamiliar setup, those players believe it will be a great experiece to play at Busch Stadium.
Following the Saluki/Redhawk football game, stadium groundskeepers will have less than 48 hours to get the field ready for the Cardinals' game the following Monday night against Washington.
There is a weather clause in the contract that allows the Cardinals to cancel the game in case of wet weather that might lead to the field being torn up. Should that happen, SIU and Southeast would play in Cape Girardeau on Sunday, September 22.
