SIU Football Falls in Heartbreaker

By WSIL Sports

CARBONDALE -- The SIU football team fell in heartbreaking fashion 16-12 to South Dakota State Saturday afternoon at Saluki Stadium.

The Jackrabbits (7-2, 5-1 MVFC) trailed 12-9 with 2:48 to play, deep in their own territory. That's when quarterback Austin Sumner engineered a 94-yard game-winning drive, with no timeouts. Sumner found Trevor Tiefenthaler on a five-yard touchdown reception with seven seconds remaining.

Sumner completed 11 passes on the final drive, including conversions on fourth and 19 from his own 10, and fourth and 10.

SIU (5-5, 4-3 MVFC) led 10-0 late in the second quarter after an Austin Johnson 42-yard field goal into the wind. But the dawgs couldn't muster much offensively in the second half.

The loss eliminates the Salukis' chances of making the playoffs, the third straight season the dawgs have missed the postseason.
