SIU Basketball Summer Workouts

CARBONDALE -- The Barry Hinson era is officially underway at SIU and thanks to a new rule by the NCAA, it started a couple of months early.

"We wanted a band-aid when we first got here and the NCAA actually supplied it for us," Saluki men's basketball coach Barry Hinson said.

The new rule allows players to particiapte in eight hours of athletic activites per week over an eight week period in the summer. Only two hours a week can involve skill-related instruction, such as practicing. The other six hours are spent working out in the weight room and conditioning. It's a big change from previous years, when coaches couldn't interact with players until the fall.

"This is definitely going to help," Salukis sophomore guard Josh Swan said. "We get to work out with out other position guys, get a feel for each other, especially with the new guys coming in."

"I just feel like there's a good vibe going on right now with everybody," Salukis junior guard Desmar Jackson said. "Coach Hinson is going to come in, he's going to do a great job of being tough on us, making us do the right thing and do all the little things right in order for us to be a great team on the court."

How a coach uses his two hours a week is up to him. Hinson and the Salukis practice Wednesday's and Sunday's for an hour each day, spending the majority of the time working on shooting drills.

"I told our guys we've got 54 days to change our culture and I think this is an opportunity for us to use the summer time as best as we can to establish what we want to do," Hinson added.

It's an uphill climb for the Salukis, who are coming off the worst season in school history.

"Whatever we're going to do, we're going to do the right thing," Hinson added. "And even though we have great challenges here, whether they be on the court or off the court, we're certainly going to handle them."

Fortunately for Hinson, that process is already underway.
