SIU Basketball Stranded on Interstate, Bus
TUSCOLA-- The SIU basketball team was rescued by a tow truck about midnight, after their bus got stranded on the Interstate around 6:15 pm, 15 miles north of Tuscola. The Salukis were heading home after a 66-48 loss to Illinois State, when their bus pulled over due to poor visibility on the side of the road. When conditions improved, the driver was unable to resume the trip, because the bus was stuck in snow.
The team waited inside the bus which had heat and plenty of gas with assistant Anthony Beane. The Interstate was shut down for several hours due to the poor weather, but a tow truck was arrived to pull the bus to a rest stop, where the team would sleep on the bus until morning, before resuming their trip to Carbondale.
Coach Barry Hinson left after the game in a separate car because he and a couple other assistants had been out recruiting the day before, but made it to Mattoon for the night where he planned to gas up and sleep in his car.
