Redbirds Fly Past Salukis for First MVC Win
CARBONDALE -- Picked second in the Missouri Valley Conference's preseason poll, Illinois State entered Sunday night's game at SIU winless in the MVC. They had no trouble taking their frustration out on the Salukis.
The Redbirds picked up their first conference win of the season, slamming the Salukis 70-56 in front of 5,254 fans at SIU Arena.
Illinois State (10-9, 1-6) led by 26 points at halftime, the largest first half deficit for Southern Illinois (8-10, 1-6) in the history of SIU Arena.
The Redbirds got out to a quick start in large part to Tyler Brown. The senior scored 18 points in the first half, including five 3-pointers. Brown led all scorers with 22 points. Jackie Carmichael contributed 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Salukis responded in the second half, going on a 21-4 run cutting the lead to 11 with 10:43 to play. But the Dawgs got no closer, losing their seventh game in the last eight tries.
Jeff Early led SIU with 16 points and nine rebounds. Kendal Brown-Surles added 13, Desmar Jackson pitched in 11 points.
