Murphysboro's Midnight Madness
MURPHYSBORO -- The Murphysboro Red Devils wasted little time getting after it in pads, starting practice at 12:01 Saturday morning.
Gary Carter put his players through a physical two plus hour workout.
"This is the first day we could hit," said Carter. "So we wanted to be the first ones in the state to get going."
For seniors such as Caleb Clover and Austin Helfrich, the physical start was welcomed.
"You come out here, and you're ready to hit," Clover said. "First official practice--you just want to get out there, have fun, and be physical."
Helfrich added, "We're physical. We're not the biggest team in the world, but we hit people hard and just play physical and tough."
The Red Devils are coming off their first winning season since 1999.
Now they're after their first playoff appearance since in 18 years.
Murphysboro will open the season August 29th at rival Carbondale.
