Montgomery Shines for SIU
CARBONDALE -- Austin Montgomery's middle name isn't versatility but it probably should be. The Marion native has been one of SIU's most consistent and widely used players the last four years. He's started more than 180 games and has a career .328 batting average.
"As long as I'm hitting, I'm feeling pretty good," Montgomery said. "It's one of my better aspects of the game."
Montgomery has 19 career home runs and will graduate with his name in the school's all-time record book. He holds top ten spots in hits, doubles, RBI's and total bases. But it's what he's done defensively that's probably the most impressive. Over his four year career at SIU, Austin has played six different positions; left and right field, first base, catcher, third base and designated hitter.
"You know I came in and was supposed to be an outfielder and catcher and I didn't expect to be put at six positions at all, it's just kind of something I fell in to," he said.
"What a great guy for a coach to have," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "I mean we literally can plug him in anywhere and he does a more than adequate job."
Montgomery has two more summer classes to complete before he graduates with a degree in mechanical engineering. School might have to wait though, especially if he hears his name in the upcoming MLB draft.
"Hopefully the draft comes around and if not, I'm going to go out and hopefully work for a big time company."
Wherever Montgomery ends up, he'll be more than ready to fill any role, whether it's on the field or as an engineer.
