WSIL -- Former SIU standout safety Mike McElroy is getting what he wanted all along, a chance to be a head high school football coach.

McElroy was named Elverado-Trico's head football coach Monday night, replacing another former Saluki football player, Zach Schumacher, who coached the Falcons for just one year.

McElroy was a volunteer assistant coach at Marion last season, his first year out of college. The Michigan native graduated from SIU in 2011. He's the school's all-time career leader in interceptions with 15.

Elverado-Trico has struggled in football for years. The Falcons have won just four games in the last seven seasons. The progam hasn't had a winning season since 1985.
