Macy's Breaks 155-Year Tradition - Will Open on Thanksgiving
October 14, 2013 10:40 p.m.
NEW YORK (AP) - Macy's Inc. says that it will open most of its stores for the first time on Thanksgiving, breaking a long-standing tradition for the venerable retailer.
In a release issued late Monday, the Cincinnati-based chain says it will open its doors at 8 p.m. on that day.
The move comes as the chain faces growing pressure from other stores. Over the past few years, rivals have gotten a jump on the official start of the holiday shopping season by opening their doors increasingly earlier on Thanksgiving.
Macy's, which operates about 800 stores, says it began planning early to let its employees review available shifts throughout the holiday season and volunteer for their preferred shifts, including on Thanksgiving.

Macy's retail stores will be open for the first time ever on Thanksgiving, according to various media reports on Monday.
The Carbondale store manager said nothing official has been released concerning store hours and referred questions to Macy's regional office.
Andrea Schwartz , VP, Media Relations for Macy's wrote in an email that Macy's has not yet issued an announcement regarding its holiday plans other than seasonal hiring.
" As soon as we have something to announce, I am happy to forward your way," Schwartz said.
This is the first time that Macy's has open on Thanksgiving since it was founded in 1858. In past years, Macy's has opened at midnight.
Many stores will be open for 24 hours straight.
Toys R Us led the "holiday creep" when it decided to open at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving night two years ago. Last year, it pushed its opening to 8 p.m.
Retailers including Target, Walmart, Sears, and Kmart also all opened Thanksgiving night at either 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. last year, and stayed open through Black Friday.
Retailers have said the earlier Thanksgiving hours appeal to customers' desire to shop following family gatherings.
