CARBONDALE -- Kyle Landon excelled in the high jump and long jump during his high school career at Chester. Landon won seven state titles and was named the 2013 Gatorade Illinois Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Chester, He took his talents to SIU where he has performed extremely well, in his freshman year.

"With the training that we have been doing here and stuff like that, the way that I feel this year, I never felt that way in high school," said Landon.

"I am very impressed with what Kyle has done so far as a freshman," said SIU jumps coach Andre Scott. "Usually when freshman come in, they are a little timid but he has done well and has a very bright future."

Landon has flourished in the high jump. He had finished in first place in nine of his 11 competitions. He also claimed the Missouri Valley Conference title at the indoor competition in the high jump.

"I knew it was going to be an interesting meet but for me to come out and win, it really ended up being a good weekend and was exciting," said Landon.

"It was a very exciting moment because I hadn't had a guy do that well in the high jump since 2005," said Scott. "So, it has been a long time in the making for someone to come in and perform that well."

Landon now has his sights set on qualifying for the outdoor nationals this season and he is focused on earning a trip to the Olympics in 2016.
