CARBONDALE -- With two of the top pitchers in the MVC slated to go Friday, runs figured to be at a premium when SIU welcomed preseason favorite Missouri State to town. Instead, the Bears took the opener 7-3.

Both Cody Forsythe and Nick Petree struggled a bit early.

The Bears put a run up in the top of the first off Forsythe, but SIU answered with the equalizer off Petree in the bottom of the first.

Both aces settled in for the next four innings.

SIU finally took the lead in the sixth, on Luke Mottashed's two out basehit. Rennie Troggio slid in just ahead of Tate Matheny's throw to give the Salukis a 2-1 lead.

It all fell apart for Forsythe in the seventh though. The Bears scored four times, all with two outs to take a 5-2 lead.

Missouri State went on to win 7-3, improving to 5-2 in conference play. The Dawgs fell to 1-6 in the league.

The series continues Saturday at 2:00 at Abe Martin Field.
